The ongoing research on architecture curatorship focuses on the Portuguese exhibitions presented at the International Architecture Exhibition at Venice Biennial, from 2004 - the occasion of Portugal's first official representation - to 2016. Targeting the curatorial processes, the thesis aims to gather information about each exhibition and generate critical content on the way that Portuguese architecture is presented in an exhibitionary context. The research intends to question the relation of those exhibitions and its respective curatorial decisions with the history of Portuguese architecture and an assumed history of architectural exhibitions in Portugal. It also aim to increase the understanding of contemporary architectural curatorship in a general sense.

This dissertation brings together information about architecture exhibitions that occurred at Belém Cultural Center since 1993 until early 2014. Through research undertaken in the archives of the institution during an academic internship, this work seeks to categorize and analyze all the shows dedicated to the disciplinary field of architecture that had been on display – both at the Exhibition Center, which ran between 1993 until the installation of Berardo Collection Museum in 2006, and at Garagem Sul, an exhibition space dedicated exclusively to temporary architecture exhibitions opened in 2012. Furthermore, the paper present some considerations about curating architecture and observes the different ways of presenting and communicating the discipline through the display device.

This research was developed as the final paper for the degree in Fine Arts at University of Brasília. It is composed by a preliminary study in the field of curatorship and by an exhibition proposal. Its main proposition was an exhibition-event that would take form during its own opening, allowing the exploration of different processes in the conception of a group show and aspiring to provoke a collective reflection on the curatorial work.
The exhibition, intitled The Presence of Ideas, was promoted through an open-call invitation. Anyone could bring their works to be presented. On November 4th 2010, at 7pm, the empty exhibition space was opened to the public. The exhibition took form in less than one hour, composed by the works of ten artists and one art-group. Together the participants created the whole exhibition, choosing which works to exhibit and where, even being resposible for its assebly. Interventions on the works and performances also happened. The final paper was composed by a research on curatorial experiences, like the ones developed by Walter Hopps (When Attitudes Become Form, 1969) and Walter Zanini (Jovem Arte Contemporânea, 1967-1974), and a reflection over the proposed exhibition. |
